Rolling a joint is a fundamental cannabis skill that can feel intimidating at first. With practice and the right technique, anyone can roll one that burns evenly and smokes smoothly.
What You Need
Cannabis flower (0.5-1 gram), rolling papers (1 1/4 size for beginners), a grinder, a filter tip or crutch (thin cardboard strip), and optionally a pen for packing.
Step 1: Grind Your Flower
Use a grinder for small, even pieces. Medium grind (dried herb texture) is ideal. Too fine restricts airflow, too coarse burns unevenly and canoes.
Step 2: Make Your Filter
Tear a small strip of thin cardboard. Fold one end into 3-4 accordion folds, then roll remaining strip around it to form a small cylinder. Prevents plant material entering your mouth and adds structure.
Step 3: Load the Paper
Hold paper with adhesive strip at top, facing you. Place filter at one end. Distribute ground cannabis evenly along the length. Use 0.5-0.75 grams for standard size.
Step 4: Shape and Roll
Using thumbs and index fingers, roll paper back and forth to shape cannabis into a cylinder. Tuck non-adhesive edge starting at the filter end where the rigid filter helps. Work toward the other end.
Step 5: Seal
Continue rolling toward the adhesive strip. Lick lightly and press down to seal. Run finger along the seal.
Step 6: Pack and Twist
Use a pen to gently pack from the open end. Twist the open end closed.
Common Mistakes
Grinding too fine (tight draw), packing too tight (restricted airflow), packing too loose (fast uneven burn), using wet cannabis (poor combustion), skipping the filter (floppy, wasteful).
